Band of the week is Fresh Penguins most self-explanatory section. Tune in each thursday to hear about fresh new bands that you really should hear.
This weeks feature is alternative band EDEN.
Most Fresh Penguin articles give some background information about the feature band but what makes EDEN so interesting is the lack of info found anywhere on the internet. Despite having over 60,000 likes on facebook and a semi-succesful alternative EP the mystery of who they are remains with no member names or background information on social media or anywhere. What we do know is they are from Dublin and released their first EP titled "End Credits" in August 2015. Regardless of the lack of details pertaining to the band, they are definitely a band you should listen to. Bringing chillstep to Bastille style melodies, EDEN creates an atmospheric, calm, and haunting sound that keeps you listening. With unique synths, and electronic drums they gradually lift songs from start to finish with mature yet different songwriting that makes them especially great.
Hear are our favourite 3 songs that we thing you should listen to first.
1. Gravity: Combining X Ambassador style production with a gradual chill buildup, the song echoes a classic Coldplay song produced like Bastille. The song features strong lyrics and well placed synths. A great first listen from the band, especially when it reaches the high point near the end.
2. End Credits: The title track of the EP featuring Leah Kelly. The song is perhaps their best written and most succesful raw song by the band (they have covered Billie Jean by Michael Jackson quite succesfully). Obviously we have high expectations for title tracks and this hits those for sure. Props to the band for knowing when to bring in a girl singer as it fit the song perfectly.
3. Interlude: This is slightly cheaping but I especially love the quick melodies spat out by the lead singer on this 2 minute and 43 second long interlude. Listen yourself and decide for yourself but I would almost count this as a song, and a well-written one at that.
